A deeply personal piece that we know many women and girls (and also men) in our culture relate to, this piece is really about disordered eating. While this painting looks at the food lies we've been fed by the processed food and diet industry in the light of humor and irony ("I'll have a Tab Diet Soda with a ho ho and a side of pills to stave off hunger"), there's also pain, regret, fear and anger mixed in this piece. The flowers represent the smiling mask that covers up the pain, birds represent the chatter of food talk and anxious circular thoughts while the chair pushed away from the table is the fear of eating and being told one needs to stay away from food to be the right person at the right size. "Starving" tells Bari's story as well as those of many Gen X women (and unfortunately our daughters) with references to the pop culture of the time. Bari painted this piece also as a way of taking the power back.
