I've been sewing pillowcases using the "Burrito Method" for 20 years. It's the easiest and best way to make a pillowcase. I also ALWAYS use French Seams for my pillow cases. These make incredible gifts and also great gift bags. This makes a king size pillowcase. At the bottom of this post there is a TikTok video that will guide you step by step. (Some shop links to buy Anthology and Storied Stripes at bottom as well.) And, psst... coming soon... tutorials for the pinwheel pillow and cuffed flat sheet above as well!
Here's how I do it:
Supplies
- 3/4 Yard fabric for cuff (1 1/4 yard if the fabric is directional) - Bari J. Anthology Fabric, "Floral Metaphor - Lemon"
- 1 Yard for body of pillow - Bari J. Anthology Fabric, "Garden Study - Fresh"
- 4" for flange - Bari J. Storied Stripes Fabric - "Tilted Horizon - Spruce"
- Elmers Washable school glue with a fine glue tip is best, but you can use pins as well
- Optional, Lace 42"
Cut
- 20" x WOF (width of fabric if fabric is 42") for for cuff (If Directional, cut length to 42" and the width to 20")
- 27" x WOF (If directional, cut the length to 42", then cut the width to 27")
- 3.5" x WOF for flange
How to:
Before you start a quick note for DIRECTIONAL FABRIC if you are making A PAIR of pillowcases: If you are making an exact pillow pair with the cuffs facing the same direction, carry on. If you plan on making a second pair, and you want that second pillow to mirror the first AND you are using directional fabric, set yourself up for success and take a photo of the direction in which you have the fabric laid out. The second one will be the opposite direction.
- Place your cuff fabric right side up on your ironing board extending the WOF or 42" side across the ironing board.
- Place the WOF or 42" side of pillow body fabric on top of the of the cuff fabric. Glue baste or sew baste the body fabric to the cuff fabric.
- Fold your flange fabric in half, lengthwise. Press. Then place the raw side of the flange fabric aligned with the other two pieces. Glue baste or sew baste in place. Add lace on top of this if you are using it.
- With the basted edge at the top, take bottom edge of the body fabric and roll in up neatly so it lays on top of the cuff fabric, out of the way of the seam allowance at the top.
- Now lift the bottom edge of the cuff fabric and align it with the top edge of the other pieces. Glue baste in place or pin well. Now you have your "Burrito". The wrong side of the cuff fabric is showing and you've created a tube.
- Sew the raw edges together using a 1/4" seam allowance.
- Pull the body of the pillow out from the inside of the tube. You should now have a 42" wide piece of fabric with a nice cuff on top. Press well.
- Lengthwise, fold the pillow case WRONG sides facing. This goes against your instinct at this point, likely. But this is how you sew the French seams.
- Make sure the cuff to body seams match up at each side. Pin or glue baste in place.
- Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew down the side of the pillow edge.
- Turn so the right side is now inside, and press well.
- Along the same edge, sew a 5/8" seam allowance all the way down. This encloses the raw edge so when finished, there will not be a raw edge inside the pillowcase. Your pillowcase will last a very long time!
- Turn and press.
- Repeat steps 8 to 13 for the bottom edge of the pillowcase, and you're done!
