How to make a lampshade
Fairview Avenue Fabric Projects

Listen, everything needs a ruffle. Including a lampshade. I know you, my maximalist friend, agree!

I made this lampshade using a  Lampshade kit then added all of my own accoutrements like bias trim and the ruffle. You can this video here on how to do make the basic shade. My only adjustment is to trim the 5/8" seam allowance to 1/2" because 5/8" gets slightly difficult to tuck.

All of the lampmaking supplies I use are listed here. (Note: this is an affiliate link and I make a small amount of money with each purchase.)

Once you've made your shade, see below for my trim and ruffle directions.

Make your bias trim
  1. Measure the circumference of your shade and 2" wide strips.
  2. Piece your strips together.
  3. Use the Clover 1" bias tape maker to make your tape.
  4. Fold in half and top stitch each side.
  5. Cut enough bias to cover the circumference of the shade plus 1/2" seam allowance
  6. First only attach the top trim. Set aside the bottom trim. Starting at the seam, start glueing the trim to the lampshade using Aileens Tacky Glue. When you are back around to where you started, fold over so you do not have a raw edge, overlap slightly and glue in place.
Make your ruffle
  1. Cut 4.5" strips that are two and a half to three times the circumference of the lampshade for your ruffle. Piece the strips together to make one long strip.
  2. Fold in one short edge of the ruffle.
  3. Fold the ruffle in half, right sides out. Starch and press in place.
  4. Ruffle the fabric using your favorite  method. I use a ruffle attachment on my Janome Sewing Machine.
  5. On the bottom edge of the shade, glue the ruffle in place, making sure the sewing line for the ruffle is above the bottom edge of the shade. Use Aileen's Tacky glue to permanantly glue.
  6. When you get to the end, trim enough that the ends overlap by just 1/2".
  7. Put the raw edge into the folded edge and glue in place.
Add the bottom bias trim
  1. Glue the bottom bias trim over the ruffle in the same manner you did the top bias trim.
