Quarter Square Triangles - Four at a Time!

Quarter Square Triangles - Four at a Time!

Make a Table Square Quilt!

Quarter Square Triangle Quilt Using 4-Patch Block Method

Fabrics used are Bari J. for Art Gallery Fabrics Anthology and Storied Stripes

    •    This method naturally mixes colors in dynamic ways.

    •    Press seams open or spin seams where the triangle points meet to reduce bulk.

Finished Block Size: 5¾” square

Blocks Created: 16 QST blocks

Final Quilt Layout: 4 x 4

Quilt Top Size (No Borders): ~23” x 23"

Materials Needed

    •    32 charm squares (5” x 5”) in two high-contrast color groups:

    •    16 light

    •    16 dark

(You’ll make 8 QST units, each giving 2 blocks = 16 total.)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Make 4-Patch Blocks

    1.    From your 32 charm squares, create 8 sets of 2 light + 2 dark squares.

    2.    Sew the squares into 4-patch blocks (2x2 layout).

    •    Light and dark should alternate like a checkerboard.

    3.    Press seams flat or nesting for the next step.

Total: 8 four-patch blocks

Step 2: Pair and Sew the 4-Patches

    1.    Take 2 four-patch blocks and place them right sides together, making sure seams nest.

    •    You’ll have 4 pairs (8 blocks total = 4 sets).

    2.    Pin around the edges if needed to prevent shifting.

    3.    Sew all the way around the block perimeter using a ¼” seam allowance.

Step 3: Cut to Create QSTs

    1.    Using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut each sewn pair diagonally corner to corner, then repeat the other diagonal.

    •    You’ll make 4 triangle wedges.

    2.    Carefully open each wedge and press to reveal the new Quarter Square Triangle blocks.

Each sewn unit gives you 4 QSTs. You’ll have 4 sets = 16 QST blocks.

Step 4: Trim Blocks to 5¾”

    •    Use a square ruler to trim each unit to 5¾” x 5¾” for a clean and uniform finish.

    •    Center the ruler so the diagonal seams cross at 2⅞”.

Step 5: Layout and Sew the Quilt Top

    1.    Arrange your 16 blocks in a 4x4 layout.

    •    Try layouts like pinwheels, hourglasses, or a scrappy random mix.

    2.    Sew into rows of 4; press seams in alternating directions.

    3.    Join the rows to complete the top.

Step 6: Finish

    1.    Add borders if desired.

    2.    Layer quilt top with batting and backing.

    3.    Quilt as you like (e.g. in the ditch, echo seams).

    4.    Bind to finish.
