Upcycle a Canvas Shopping Bag

Upcycle a Canvas Shopping Bag

Often a shop will give us a reusable bag. Mine end up in my trunk for groceries and sometimes they go to Goodwill. I also have a stack of muslin bags my daughter left here. She was going to screenprint on them. I've been adding using random quilt blocks I have (UFOs!) and lining the bags to use for myself and for gifting. We can do the same thing to the ones we get from shops.

Here's how I did it.

  1. Cut 1/16" of bottom of the bag off using a rotary cutter.
  2. Applique your quilt block onto the bag front using a zig-zag stitch on your machine.
  3. Cut a lining 1/4" bigger all the way around than the bag itself.
  4. Sew the lining together leaving the top open and a 5" opening in the bottom of the lining.
  5. Sew the bottom of the bag back together.
  6. Place the lining and the bag right sides together, tucking the handles in on the right side of the bag.
  7. Sew around the top of the bag.
  8. Turn right side out, press and top stitch the top edge of the bag.
  9. Top stitch the opening at the bottom of the lining closed.

What a fun project this will be to make, and I already have all of the materials needed to begin. Thank you for the lovely inspiration.
