When I thought of doing this project I was seriously patting myself on the back. I always want the cuffs of my sheets to be prettier and wider. I thought of making my own sheets. But for a king size bed you'd need very wide fabric, right?
Then it occured to me! I could EASILY just replace the cuffs with a patchwork strip, and attach it using the very same method I use to make a pillowcase ... the burrito method as described here. I recommend you read this first and watch the video.
I used my Bari J. Anthology fabrics to make a 16" patchwork strip the length of my top sheet plus a hem allowance. I first hemmed the edges to match the sheet.
Next, I laid the patchwork strip right side up. I cut off the existing cuff from the top sheet using a ruler and my rotary cutter.
Then I lined the top of the sheet also right side up with the top edge of the new cuff patchwork. I glue basted it in place so it wouldn't shift.
Then, like a burrito method pillowcase cuff, I rolled the top sheet up so it was shorter than the cuff and layed it on top out of the way of the seam allowance at the top, and I brought the bottom raw edge of the cuff wihch was now exposed in line with the top raw edges already glue basted together. I then glue basted that edge in place, enclosing the sheet in the tube.
Using a 1/2" seam allowance, I sewed all the pieces together. Then I pulled the sheet out of the tube.
Voila! A finished cuff.
