Bari J.'s Modern Maximalist Master Bedroom - Full Reveal with VIDEO!

After reading this post, be sure to scroll to the bottom to see the full VIDEO tour!

It's week six of the One Room Challenge. Again, a HUGE thank you to Linda from Calling it Home for putting this fabulous event together twice a year. And another thank you to Better Homes and Gardens, the media sponsor of the event. For more information on the event, click here.

Our Modern Maximalist Master Bedroom turned out far better than I even imagined. We are both so happy to have a room that we love and chose everything for with care and intention after 25+ years of marriage!

One Room Challenge

what we got done this week

This week involved repairing quite a bit of drywall ... minimally three times.

• Installed the floating shelves... aka: bedside tables. This was, in fact, harder than I imagined it to be. The first pair we installed, there were actually studs to attach it to, but there were leveling issues. We highly recommend what we did for installing the second pair. Kevin cut "stilts" to the exact height the shelves were to be, and as we installed, we balanced the shelf on the stilts. That gave us both an "extra set of hands" and guaranteed leveling. When you're installing floating shelves, remember, you have to level the depth as well as the length. And of course, walls are never completely plumb. After the shelves were installed, Kevin caulked around the edges for a seamless look.

The second pair of shelves also required adding a stud in a wall. That meant that we had to open the wall. Kevin cut a square opening, put the stud in, clamped it in place, and screwed it through the drywall effectively giving the floating shelf "a leg in the wall". (This is how he mansplains the "science" behind floating shelves to me. LOL. I go with it because if I seem to I know what he's talking about he might make me do it myself. That would be TRAGIC for reals because while I understand how it's done, I would do it horribly because I lack patience. So let's not share that bit with him.)  Then he repaired the hole and we installed the shelves. (video at the bottom of this post to show you how he put the stud in the wall)

• We had an electrician come and install the bedside pendant lights, but it turned out he could install the electrical, but not BOTH pendants, because one arrived shattered. Oddly, I had called CB2 last week because they were late, and as it turned out, they'd sent a second package which arrived yesterday, and Kevin installed the second pendant yesterday afternoon. Removing the can lights and adding pendants meant that the two holes where the recessed can lights were had to be repaired. We did that part ourselves. (Cue scene where I'm standing on a ladder with a blow dryer, drying dry wall mud. Because this needed to be done fast!) I'm actually super impressed with how it turned out. We can't see where the cans were at all.

• The TV was moved down and the wired in the wall. YAYAYYYAY! No more visible wires (more drywall work!). This made me inordinately happy! Regarding the height of the TV... the bed is lower and the credenza is lower than before, so for viewing purposes moving it down made sense. But I also always treat TVs how I'd treat hanging art. Above a dresser or bed or any other piece of furniture, art should feel like it's part of the furniture. So hanging it within 6-8" of the piece makes a cohesive look. Hanging too high makes it look disconnected from the rest of the room.

• And my favorite finish this week was changing all of the outlets to white with screw-less plates. I know. That's probably a peculiar favorite, but let me tell you, it makes a huge difference. Kevin wasn't thrilled about this prospect, but even he admits it's way better. I can't wait to do the rest of the house. I actually changed one straggler this morning after I noticed it in the photos. I was like Mommy Dearest: "NO MORE WIRE HANGERS", but I was all, "NO MORE SCREWS IN SWITCHPLATES!"

• Lastly, the floor lamp arrived to go with the painting I created, plant and bench. Super Husband says, "That is a gratuitous lamp with all the lights you have in here already". Whatever.

The full reveal

First, I couldn't have done this room the way it is without sponsors, Joybird (the Camille bed) and Mitzi (the Colette Chandelier). A huge thank you to both of them. A full list of all the products I used in this makeover is at the bottom of the post.

This bed from Joybird is super heavy and sturdy. The velvet is as utterly delicious in person as it is in the photos. And the vibe? Well, it nails exactly the luxe look I was going for.

The Collete Chandelier from Mitzi just gives me the hugest smile every time I see it. It is installed in the center of the room (as opposed to centered to the bed), and gives the wallpaper a huge highlight as well. I love the glamour of having this chandelier in the bedroom.
