Listen, I like everything in my life to be pretty. That includes the oven mitts I take the sour dough out of the oven with. Recently I made a little set using "My Mother's Daughter" fabrics (Bari J. for Art Gallery Fabrics). Today we are going to make the oven mitt part of this project. Find the fabrics here.

Supplies:

2 fat quarters Bari J. "My Mother's Daughter" fabrics for Art Gallery fabrics. I used Flower Hedge in Petal Blue for the exterior. For the lining I used Rattan in garden.

1 - quarter yard for ruffle. I used Holly Hocks in Bloom, Periwinkle.

1 - 5" piece of ribbon or trim for the hanging loop.

1/2 Yard insulbrite heat resistant batting.

An oven mitt you like the shape of or an oven mitt pattern. You can find one here.

Pattern Making:

Trace the oven mitt of your choice. Be sure to give the space between the thumb and the fingers a generous curve. You don't want a point there. You'll want to be able to gently sew around the curve.

Cutting:

Cut 2 - fabric, right sides facing

Cut 2- lining, right sides facing

Cut 2 - insulbrite, right sides facing

Cut one 4.5" strip of fabric for ruffle.

Sewing:

Make the Exterior

1. Place your exterior pieces together right sides facing, layer the insulbrite pieces on the each wrong side (you could quilt the pieces of each side together or just baste – I like to glue baste). 
2. Using a 1/4" seam allowance sew all the way around the mitt leaving the wrist part open, of course.

Make the Lining

1. Place the two lining pieces together, right sides facing.
2. Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew all the way around leaving a hand sized opening along one edge. This will be how you turn the project right side out in the end.

Make the Ruffle and Add the Loop

1. Fold your 4.5" strip of ruffle fabric in half the long way, wrong sides facing. (I like to starch the wrong side before I fold. The wet starch helps the pieces stay nicely together.
2. Using a ruffle foot or other ruffle making method, create a ruffle with enough length to go on both sides of the cuff of the mitt.
3. Fold one short end in.
4. Glue baste the raw edge of the ruffle around the edge of the cuff, tucking the unfinished end into the finished end.
5. Pin the loop over the ruffle with the raw edges aligned. I put mine at the opposite corner of the thumb.
6. Stitch the ruffle and loop onto the edge of the cuff using a scant 1/4" seam allowance.
7. Top stitch the ruffle ends together so it's closed.

Put it all Together

1. With the right side of the exterior inside out, place the lining into the exterior, right sides facing.
2. Align the side seams and pin at the cuff.
3. Sew at the cuff using a 1/4" seam allowance all the way around.
4. Turn through the opening in the lining.
5. Press and stitch the opening closed.
