Week Five: Attaching the Borders
This week is where everything really starts to come together. We’re attaching the border units to the center blocks — and suddenly your quilt top begins to look finished.
Each center star is framed by border stars that create the outer structure of the quilt. Two border stars equal the length of one center star, so accuracy and alignment are especially important here.
You’ll notice there are a lot of points to match and seams to nest. Wherever you can, have your seams going in the opposite direction so that you can nest seams.
This is where glue basting becomes your best friend. Take a moment to glue baste each intersection before sewing. It stabilizes the layers and helps prevent shifting, which is key to keeping those star points crisp and aligned. Remember how last week we made sure we aligned points? Glue baste the borders on in the same manner.
Before stitching, mark the points on the side you’ll be sewing on. This simple step makes it much easier to see exactly where each point should land as you guide the fabric through the machine. When you can clearly see where the points are, matching becomes much more precise and far less stressful.
Sew slowly, check your alignment as you go, and press carefully after attaching each border section. This stage rewards patience — and the payoff is beautiful, clean lines that frame your center blocks perfectly.
Once your borders are attached, your quilt top is complete! Next week we’ll move on to quilting and binding to finish your project.
You’re in the home stretch now — keep going. I can’t wait to see your progress!
Supplies
Click here for my favorite quilting supplies on Amazon. (Amazon link is an affliate link.) You can also find many of these at your local quilt shop.
I'm a huge proponent of glue basting. If you haven't already, I highly recommend getting a bottle of Elmer's washable school and my favorite glue tips from Cristy Fincher.
I support independent local quilt shops, both brick and mortar and online. I encourage you to shop local first. Therefore, I have listed shops by state and country. Happy quilting!
