The Diamond Technique: A Fresh Approach to Shelf Styling

The Diamond Technique: A Fresh Approach to Shelf Styling

If you have any shelves in your home, you know that filling them with style can sometimes be a challenge. But prepare to become an expert with one simple technique.

This method offers a framework in which you place your objects by visualizing an imaginary diamond shape that guides your entire composition.

Here's how it works: Picture a diamond overlayed on your shelves. The top and sides are the narrowest. Now, place all of your objects relatively within the diamond.

You'll start by placing larger showpieces in the center, now work your way out. In this composition the top features two shorter, small items and the sides have lighter, less dense objects plus negative space.

Pro tips:

1. Use groups of vertical and horizontally stacked books. I tend to put these on the shelves first. Make sure you zig zag the stacks never placing a vertical stack aligned to a horizontal stack. This allows the eye to move all over the shelf.

2. Color is key in the Bari J. world, so don't shy away from using it. You can use my art as a jumping off point for your color story. Pull out secondary colors from the print and echo them in smaller accents throughout your display.

3. Vary heights of items, again with the shorter, less weighted items to the outer corners and taller, for the most part in.

4. When selecting pieces, think texture and contrast. Pair the smooth metal of a teapot with a textured planter. Set a sleek modern sculpture on weathered, vintage books. This interplay of textures adds richness and interest to your shelves.

5. Think of shelf styling as a way of telling your story. Use items that mean something to you, whether it's a cherished travel souvenir or a piece that makes you smile. Your decor should always be a reflection of you.

Remember: We are not aiming for perfect symmetry here. The goal is a curated, slightly undone look that keeps the eye moving. Feel free to tilt a frame slightly or create an asymmetrical book stack. It's these little details that add depth and interest to your display.

I hope this helps! Think of the diamond shape as an outline to play with. It's an easy way to create a beautiful display! Now it's your turn to make those shelves shine with your unique style.

Keep in mind that in the world of Bari J. and Curated Maximalism rules are made to be beautifully broken. So experiment and let your shelves become a personal gallery of your style.
